At least 24 hours before your first treatment, we always carry out:
- A consultation and history, where we try and find out whether there any medical reasons or activities that may preclude or delay your treatment. For example, if you are pregnant, we will not treat you.
- A patch test, where we perform a small number of test shots in the treatment area, with slightly different machine settings, to see how you respond. Just like a patch test before you dye your hair, if you react badly, it may prevent you from having a treatment
What is a consultation and history?
During a consultation, we will:
- Ask you about your medical history. Some conditions, such a pregnancy, cancer and other certain conditions, will mean that you can not have treatment. Some times we may require a note from your doctor to indicate that treatment can go ahead.
- Ask about any medication you are taking. Some medicines may indicate conditions that preclude treatment, other drugs may cause photosensitivity that would be an issue.
- Ask you about your expectations. If you are expecting miracles, then we may not be able to offer a treatment that meets your expectations!
- Ascertain your skin type. This is based on your skin tone and reaction to the Sun. We can treat most skins types for hair removal, but only some lighter skin types for pigmentation and vascular.
- Ask about your recent sunning or artificial tanning activities, as these can delay treatment.
What is a patch test?
If your consultation and history does not preclude you from treatment, we will carry out a patch test. This is where we carry out about half a dozen IPL test shots at various machine settings, as if we were starting a treatment, but on a much smaller treatment area. This enable us to:
- Discover the machine settings which are most effective for you
- Ensure that the treatment minimizes any discomfort
- See how your skin reacts during the patch test, and over the next 24 hours (up to 7 days for some treatments and skin types). If you have an allergic reaction, then we might need to adjust the settings on another patch test, or we might not even be able to continue with the treatment.
What is the cost?
We do not make a charge for your patch test and consultation. This is somewhat unusual in the industry, but we know how disappointed we would feel if we wanted to start a course of treatments, but some other factor was preventing us from doing so. You might even tell your friends!
